Lake Drive Change
In other news, the board, which still has not selected a replacement for Lake Drive School Principal Laura McKirdy who plans to retire, approved a reduction to 40 percent of full-time status for McKirdy at the Monday, Jan. 12, meeting.
Her current full salary is $122,616. She has been principal of the school for the deaf for at least 25 years.
Dr. McKirdy, while she made it clear she is still retiring, has struggled and still has some things to resolve with the state (regarding her retirement benefits), explained Superintendent John Kazmark.
He told the board the plan is for McKirdy to come in to the school two days a week through the end of the school year.
The board also approved the appointment of Jane Mattingly as the interim principal at Lake Drive School at a salary of $450 a day.
Kazmark said Mattingly would work five days a week, which he said is important for the continuity of operations at the building. He said McKirdy would, of course, work with Mattingly as well and he said he planned to be at the building quite often in the coming months.
McKirdy is a dynamic, very highly respected and well-liked administrator crediting with building a statewide reputation for excellence for Lake Drive School in her tenure there.
The school accepts students from around the state with varying degrees of hearing loss and offers them a variety of options to help them communicate effectively and, thereby, get the most out of their education.
The grade K-12 district charges tuition to out-of-district students in the school which offsets the costs of running the specialized operations.
